O.K. Here goes,
We were driving maybe 30 mph N. on 161 from the Orange Beach bait shop to the new launch near Tacky Jacks when a young man (Spring Breaker) in a small SUV in front of us realized that he was about to miss his turn. He stood on his brakes and put on his turn signal leaving me about 1/2 of a second before killing him. Instinctively I steered to the right to miss him, and locked up all 8 of my tires ( 4 truck, and 4 trailer). Things went fine until the truck tires hit the sand. We immediately jackknifed with the truck being dragged by the boat until it ended up on it's side in the ditch, the boat holding it from tipping onto the roof. Miraculously Denise and I were unharmed. After undoing her seat belt for her we climbed out the passenger door.
Damage report:
Both bumpers and most of the drivers side of the truck are ruined. The rear axle is now about 3 inches to the right of where it belongs (bent frame?).
The trailer has a bent tongue. twisted winch arm, and some sheared bolts. Both outboards have bent skegs, one not too bad.
The boat did not get a scratch!!!!!!!!!! Had to Barkeepers Friend some rubber from the rear truck tire of the starboard bow area but thats it.
All in all, we are very fortunate indeed. Whew.
The insurance adjusters will visit on Monday and we will commence getting back on our feet. Most likely in a new truck.
Was I going too fast? Likely. I was going fishing!!!! Was this an occurence one is liable to encounter? Not often. Is Spring Break something to approach with additional caution? Definitely.
Thank you all for your concern and be careful.

Yes. Glad no one was hurt. (Although, the "young driver" may be in need of a good throttling IMO). Like I tell people all the time @ accident scenes. "Does it suck? Yes. But it's basically just metal and plastic. It can be fixed/replaced. Human lives; not so easily". _________________ "We can go over there...behind the 'little one'....."

Dan,
Hopefully the "young spring breaker" realized what he caused and then stopped and confessed to his misdeed.
Glad that the two of you were physically fine! _________________ Dave S.

With my boat I did nothing today. I did how ever get to help Warren launch his new 22 and go for a ride with the girls. The boat ran fine with the twin 40s. We did have a problem with the one engine going into reverse. Will have to take the shifter apart and check it out.
the water was great and we ran into the new owners of a 22 from portland. cant remeber the boat name right now. Hope to get them to come to the friday harbor gig.
there was a boat at the ramp with a nice 50 lbs halibut. Said he ran to canada in his 18 fter. cant say he did not. _________________ Thomas J Elliott

Tom, check the shift rod halfway down the front of the engine. There's an adjustment there that, if not properly set will give you shifting problems. I had twin 45's and that's a common problem.

Mixed it up with about 2000 other boats on the columbia in north portland. Had to launch 20 miles upstream because of the mile long lines waiting to get into the ramps near the airport. 2000 is not an exaggeration. There had to be that many in the 10 miles from I-5 downstream. Thursday was hot, friday less hot, saturday not much and sunday was a bust. But all you could see was a sea of aluminum and camouflage clothing. Sue asked me if there were other women in the boats. Told her I couldn't tell because of the camouflage gear. She wondered if they were trying to hide from the fish. |

The Great Outdoors!
Kind like the L.A. Freeways, huh?
The Population Bubble meets the PNW!
Someday your salmon will be like our salmon in California, almost extinct!
The score: Salmon 4, People 89 (Hypothetical)
Sorry, but it just burns me up that we can't seem to realize that we're gradually destroying a resource and a fellow member of God's Creation on this Earth through individual greed.
On Edit: I'm not trying to blame sportfishermen for all the problems, just to overall pressure on the salmon population. It seems everyone points the finger at the other group on the salmon issue, from sportfishermen, commercial fishermen, dam builders and operators, loggers, the Sea Lions, agricultural farmers, fish farmers, gold miners, etc. The list is very long.
I just think there's too much pressure in general, everywhere!
Catch and release 'em if you can!
