Hey, Steve on Shearwater -
I finally got around to cutting a hole in the wall of the flotation chamber up front. It is a big void with no foam, and is dry as a bone. It was really sealed well, because it smells like brand new fiberglass. Man, does that seem like a lot of wasted space! Maybe old Red Fox is onto something with the neat stuff he did to his up there.
I made a hatch cover for the hole. It's about 7" round. The flange is turned out of some kind of nylon material, and the cover inset into it is a round piece of clear polycarb. The flange will be screwed and glued, and the cover will be srewed to it with a gortex seal. I hope kay doesn't get mad about the felt pen marks on the lid for her plastic bowl. It is the perfect size to trace the hole cut.
OK - back to work on the boat. More stuff later. _________________ TyBoo Mike

WOW, free space, can't beat that, I'll bet you'll have enough room in there to store an extra dog _________________ Ken

Only taken me a year to read this Mike. Expected that is was hollow up there darn thing sounds like a drum when the water slaps against the side of the hull just right.
Now that you have done the exploratory work I'm thinking maybe a square flush type hatch on each side of the v-berth under the mattress.
Maybe rig up a way to store the tackle boxes, the spare anchor, 500' of three strand, fenders, food, water, a family of immigrants.
You know how it is, additional storage will never go unused once created.

I will be interested to see that area as my boat is built. I think the reason it is a sealed empty chamber is for the flotation requirements that C-Dory must meet. If we comprimize it it is "okay" but they can't. A waterproof access would still not compriimize the flotation much as long as it was sealed. _________________ David and Kate
