I have a green 2002 CD22 with dark green bottom paint. I can't seem to find a green bottom paint that is as dark as what is on the boat. Does anyone know where I can find this paint. Thanks |

I paint Journey On's bottom a different colour each time. That way I can tell if the bottom paint is wearing thin. I've been through red and light green, next time I'll try what's on sale.
For bottom paint colour samples look at Defender's various lines of bottom paint. Remember, one wants a paint the will withstand sitting on a trailer and an ablative paint is good because you don't have to sand the residue off.
That's the closest I can come. Remember it's underwater.

How does the Vivid match? It is possiable that you have an old paint, no longer made. _________________ Bob Austin

That's the same reason I always paint it the same color (black). I just don't want to know when it's wearing thin. _________________ MartyP

There are different types of bottom paint, ablative and hard. It would be best to know what kind of paint you have. You can't paint a hard paint over ablative and some paints are not compatible.
We have epoxy barrier coats under the bottom paint that are a different color from the ablative bottom paint, so we can easily see when touch up is necessary.
Best wishes,

It sure looked good with green bottom paint but I guess it would be ok with black also so I think that is the way I will go. The dark green paint just don't seem to exist anymore. Thanks for the replies. It helped. |

In SW Florida during the summer months you could just leave the bottom paint be any color and after about 30 days I am sure it would have turned green without any help from the pigment people. _________________ Mike Taylor

I painted mine green in 2004. I had to retouch a couple of spots since then. I also wanted a darker paint and took the bottom paint to the hardware store and added some dark tint. I don't recall what color was used. Despite all that its still is a pale green. You can check out my photo's to see the results.

I am going to put the first coat of bottom paint on this spring. the boat has never had bottom paint before. on the sailboat we have a barrier coat then bottom paint. do you have a suggestion on which barrier to use? I will go with a Trinidad bottom paint as I have had great luck with it on the sailboat. The Dory will sit in the water most of the summer and trailer in the shoulder and winter months. We do take it out often year round so it will have to stand up to the on/off trailer abuse. _________________ DVant brother to DV8 |

Well, you picked the right time to do the painting. I noticed that bottom paint's on sale, at least at defender.
I have a couple of suggestions. We used InterProtect 2000E Epoxy on the bottom of both our sailboat and Journey On. Good results, since we had no blistering. Your call.
As to the bottom paint, we used Petit Trinidad with good results on the sailboat. Then we shipped the boat from San Diego to Mobile and it was out of the water for 3-4 weeks. The bottom paint peeled off in spots. Also, we had to grind the residue off, since we had put on several coats of Trinidad over the years, and the residue can only build up so thick. I'd get an ablative paint that can be out of the water. A lot of C-Dory owners use Micron CSC, but I'm sure Petit has an equivalent product.
