Hey Marc - have you used this? If so, what do you think of it?

I've been thinking of getting a GPS receiver to use with my Dell Mini 9, and haven't seen one this cheap. However, a quick perusal of online reviews for this unit isn't giving me the warm fuzzies. Freezes, inaccuracy, etc.

I've been eyeballing a GlobalSat BU-353, which is about twice as much - $37 at Amazon. It's got strong reviews at Amazon and elsewhere - super quick fixes, waterproof, magnetic base...and advertised as compatible with Windows/Mac/Linux.

..for 18 bucks, I bought one. Thanks Marc. Do you have a suggestion for a cheap 12 volt adapter for the Mini?

Why not "cut the cord" and go Bluetooth

OR

Unsure whether to buy a USB or a Bluetooth GPS receiver? Why not get one that can do both, USB and Bluetooth!

DISCLAIMER : I have no Financial Interest in the items I've linked to

I haven't used the Delorme unit, but I have the GlobalSat BU-353 and it works great on my Mac. Nearly instant fixes and seems to be every bit as accurate as the much more expensive Raymarine 125.

Wow busy day ! I missed all the action ! I just saw it and clicked the order button this A.M. Its got to work better than the Cobra and Lowrance units I have now , cause they dont hardly work at all . I will play around with it ,but I have to get a usb DVD Drive now as the netbook does not have one...... Maybe they dont protect it as vigorously like Microsoft, and I can copy it to my backup HD.... Ill find out when it comes and review it . I have the old Garmin software and a copy of Maptech to play with as well . Next I suppose Ill have to get a Jupiter Jack................

I have the LT-40 with 2009 Street Atlas but prefer running "the puck" with Delorme Topo USA. Latter does not "talk to you" but rather gives a visual of upcoming turns, etc.

Curious to hear how things are working out for all you cheap C-Brats that picked this GPS puck up... Mr. Green

Me - just couldn't pull the trigger with all the bad reviews. I went ahead and got the GlobalSat BU-353 from Amazon for $37. I've tested it on my Mac (from my office - puck sitting in window) with openCPN, GPSNavX and MacENC - works great on all three. In fact, the satellite lockup is pretty amazing; it's the fastest I've seen on any GPS device I've owned. Locks in under 5 seconds, and that's in the house sitting on my window ledge, with a very obstructed view to the outside.

I'm going to build up lightweight Linux install on my Dell Mini 9, and try it on openCPN there. Probably give CrunchBang a shot - it's Ubuntu based, but trimmed down significantly for performance.

Bill- I got the $17 gps. Then I got the $35 external DVD player to load the software. Still waiting for the $20 12 volt adapter. All I need now is for you to come over and put all this stuff on my Inspiron Mini!

I know it's hard to believe, but Bill never showed up! So, of course I called my son Joe. He tried to load this stuff and tonight I got this email from him

"So here is the problem. The mapping software requires a minimum screen resolution of 800 * 600. When I attempted to load the software, it checks your system and aborts loading because your machine doesn’t have enough resolution. I believe you have something like 1020 * 560.
I went into your display settings to see if I could just set the resolution higher, but it appears that it is not possible to change this. ''

Unless somebody had a better idea I'm gonna have to ask Lizzie to figure it out. I hate to ask her because she does get lots of homework in the second grade.

Are you running Ubuntu or XP?
Try upgrading Ub
For XP, look for new display drivers

My Asus Eeepc 1005HAB running Windows 7 shows a screen resolution of 1024 x 600. Are you using a netbook with a nine inch screen?

You could probably plug the netbook into an external display that supports higher resolution. You could at least get the software running and see if you can change any settings to make it open on the small display. Also check with the manufacturer of the software for updates as I assume netbooks are a popular platform for running their software.
