The albie reports have me antsy so I've scratched up a crew for Thurs & Fri 8/20 & 21.
If any brat in the area has similar plans, lets hook up and buddy boat out there. After all, its only 55NMs out....

If only you wanted to boat up to the Wash/OR borderline and head out from there... THEN I would be your buddy boat. Alas, since you are in CA, I'll have to be your buddy boat in spirit. Go out and slay 'em!!! Thumbs Up

Roger,

If you think the fish are close enough, send me a PM.

Steve

I am thinking of a Thurs tuna run for either Bodega or HMB depending on which reports come in best. If you decide to run HMB, pm at 916.768.4488 and we can possibly run together.

Hi Vern,

We tried HMB 2wks ago. Out past the Gumdrop near the 124 line for nada. Turned out to be a late afternoon bite but we had already headed for the barn.

We're set for Monterey on Thurs. Perhaps we can hook up for a different trip. Good luck on your run and looking forward to your report.

Hi Nam,

Near the 124 line is 60+ miles...that is a good run. How much fuel are you loading up on? The farthest out I have gone to date is 45 miles and the latest temp breaks out at Bodega show 50 - 60 out. I know Monterrey is closest right now, but too short a window for me. Looks like maybe 70 gallons would be on the safe side?

Thanks.

Here's a good point of reference for fish reports in the Monterey area- Bayside Marine
Good luck guys, I'm hoping they come within range down here.

Fished out of Monterey today. 36.33-122.58. Around 50 miles wsw of Monterey harbor give or take. Fishing was red hot stopped with 16 at noon for the 3 of us. Slow pic in the am. Went ballistic at about 10:30. Could have doubled our count easily, we had more than enough. Lots of boats out there. Counted 20 within sight at one time. You really could do it without a buddy boat. We wont let anything happen to you. There were boats with up to 35.

Vern, sorry about the late reply....prepping the boat for the trip.

We had 4 ppl that day, ice, two 5 gallon portables, topped off tanks, and fishing gear. Went past the Gumdrop, started trolling and came within a few miles short of the 124 line. Turned around and started trolling back. At 2pm, we ran for the Farrallones for rockcod and the tuna bite started at 3pm.....oh well. Back at the harbor, we had about a gallon or two left on the starboard tank, port was empty, and we didnt even touch the portables. I'm aware of the 1/3 rule, but I wanted to test the limitations of the boat and motor. Now I know and couldnt be happier.

~160NM +/- a few RT, FAC seas, 4500-4700 rpms when running and an occassional bump to 5200 rpms. We went out light and came back even lighter all on a single Honda 90 that ran for 12 hrs. Average is 3.4 miles so it sounds about right with everyone else's numbers.

Below Frigid,

Thanks for the encouraging words, report and numbers. Your numbers confirmed my original starting point of 36.30/123.00. Glad you got them and thanks for leaving some for us!

Albie;

We have had a few good days for tuna this year. You should be able to get into them down there. Most of our runs have been out of Eureka and required around a 60nm trip each way. There is some great water up in Gold Beach Or. and Coos Bay. When the wind gives us more than a one day window we will head out of some port between Bodega Bay, Ca and Newport, Or. Our group will travel when needed.

If you are looking for a buddy boat down there. Try the Bay Area Tuna Club at www.offshoreanglers.com or www.humboldttuna.com. Either one of these sites will be a good resource for buddies and locations to fish. My number is 707-444-3918 if you would like to talk about the sites or just talk about tuna fishing. Good luck out there and be safe.

Gene Morris

Here's a tuna report from yesterday(from Coastside Fishing Club):

"Got to 46/46 had a instant double on dorado plugs and purple clones

got dub's and trips and had them crashing the surface for 2 bait stops

went quiet, found warmer and bluer water due west and north at 58/56

switched all over to dorado plugs and clones at 1pm
doubles and signles

ran out to 00/00 thru 02/08, the epic bite
loaded the boat with more fish than we had storage!! we had the ice though!!

pulled plug at 6pm, still bitting hard!!!
Ran back to Pt Bonita, 76.7NM, downhill, ran 25-30knots back
got in around 9pm to dock

start at the 45/45 work NW, they are there in cords

I'd be interested in making a run sometime over labor day weekend if the conditions are favorable and the fish are still around. We keep the boat in the water in SF Bay (Sausalito) but could easily trailer it somewhere else to launch too.

Nam,

Those are great numbers for your mileage and dead on to the estimated 180 mile range for 46 gallons. I run twin Yami 50's and getting very close to those numbers also. My trip was aborted yesterday as I left out of Lawson's Landing (near Bodega) due to my GPS malfunctioning. I did not have my backup GPS so decided to cancel the run to the numbers which were ~50miles out...next time, I will be ready! I took a full tank plus 3 six gallon containers for a total of 64 gals.

Below Frigid, there is a guy out of Santa Cruz or Monterey called Six Pak who fishes solo out of a CD16 for tuna. He posts trips where he has run out over 80 miles without a buddy boat...he'g got huge Shocked Shocked But must have confidence in the CD to handle the big water if he ever got caught.

For N CA, Monterey to HMB seems to be where the fish are holding best so far this year.

Are there any tuna further north?

Thanks Roger for buddy boating in spirit.
Vern, you missed a good bite!
Dougal, I'm officially addicted, will plan a trip if conditions are good.
Gene, thank you very much. BTW, I enjoyed reading your Alaska trip.

We had one minor incident with the motor today but other than that everything went smooth. In all my excitment, I forgot the camera at home on Thurs so no pictures - sorry. On to the fishing report...

8/20 - We left Monterey Bay at 5:30am and wanted to avoid the sport fleet. The fleet was planning 33/58 so I decided to stick to 36.30/123.00. We found a different fleet at the numbers....commercials and partyboats - worked the area and ended at 32/122.59.

16 fish for 3 ppl. Had 2 triples that turned into doubles, 2 doubles, 3 on swimbaits, lots of singles, and lost 5. Ended the day at 2pm for a 2.5 hr run back to the barn. Other boats in the area reported radio fish counts ranging from 6 up to 40+. Wow!!

8/21 - Weather did a 180 on us. We were out 11 miles from Monterey and had to turn around. No tuna today.
