|
|
On our last trip, I noticed the Suzuki tachometer stopped working. I checked the connections coming out of the tach today and they all seemed tight. I didn't follow the connections all the way to the battery or engine, I guess I wouldn't know where to start.
Any ideas? _________________ Peter & Caryn

On my Yamaha 40 when the tach quit....it was the voltage regulator...to check that...all you need do is..... take the voltage regulator from the other motor...and swap them...if the tach now works...you found the problem.... it is the voltage regulator that sends the signal to the tach.

Check tightness of battery conections. tighten with a wrench not fingers. IF that is the problem it might have already cooked your charging coil. _________________ Gary & Gerrie former Minnie Swann owners

I also was able to buy that voltage regulator off EBAY for $40....I guess that lots of motors use the same part number as mine came from a Mercury yet had the exact part number. Saved several hundred and works perfect.

Joel-
That's because the Mercury 4 strokes had Yamaha power heads for quite a few years.
I don't know whether that is still true, though.
I've heard claim that Mercury is now making it's own 4 stoke engines, but that may be a statement made by factory reps and dealers to promote the Mercury line in prestige and stature instead of owing up to the Yamaha origin.
If so, in my mind, they'd be ahead to admit to their Yamaha origination, since folks have such high regard for the quality of the Yamaha brand. Others may disagree (YMMV!)
Are you up at your cabin in Chester for the summer now, or still in Camarillo?

Mercury sued the Japanese manufacturers for "dumping" motors in the U.S. market a number of years ago . Yamaha stopped selling them their powerheads .Mercury lost the suit . They had to build their own .Thats the short version.

Just a follow-up on my tach problem.
After doing some research on other forums, I discovered that the Suzuki branded tach that was installed on C-Dancer is made by Fauria Instruments. It turns out that the failure rate for these Fauria tachs are quite high. I found the best price available and finally installed the new tach. It works!
The wire colors match but the wire harness that came with the tach didn't match the installation on the boat. So, snip snip and everything worked out great.
