S1000 Data Cable

I am installing an S1000 autopilot and want to put the computer underneath the galley along with the drive motor. The supplied data cable is not long enough to reach the area behind the helm. Am I correct in thinking that the data cable can simply be extended with a 9 pin serial extension cable?

I wrote RayMarine and asked whether they sold a longer data cable or whether the cable could be extended with a serial cable. They wrote back less than 24 hours later and indicated that they did not sell a longer cable but that the cable could be extended. Problem solved!

So are you saying that a 9-pin extension cable has the same color coding?

If so, I might do the same as you are. That motor is pretty darn noisy!

I think it is even simpler than thinking about color coding. If it is a 9 pin with a male connector at one end and a female connector at the other end, it is simply an extension cord. It picks up whatever pin is on the S1000 computer and carries it along without changing pin assignments. I went to my local Staples this morning and got one. Don't recall the exact price but it was about $10-15 and no wait or shipping.

Thanks guys. I guess I was wondering how would you know if the colors lined up when trying to interface with another unit via NMEA 0183.

For example, Raymarine says:

Wire Color | Pin Number | NMEA-S1000 | 3rd party GPS

Orange | 3 | + Receive | NMEA + Transmit
Blue | 5 | - Receive | NMEA - Transmit

Using an extension, how would you know if the colors/pin numbers match up in order to connect it to the GPS wires? Is there a way to determine the color to Pin Number on generic extensions?

Sorry if I'm making this way too complicated. I really don't know the answer. Confused

I just came in off of working on the boat but in the morning, I will check the continuity pin to pin of the cable I got from Staples which purports to be an extension cable. Presuming it checks out, I will post the part number and then there will be at least one cable that we know is simply an extension cable with all 9 wires without having any pin reassignments.

Just checked the cable pins and sockets for continuity. There are 9 wires in the cable and no changing of pin assignments. It is a true "serial extension cable" and does nothing more or less. I got it at Staples. It is 6 ft long, made by Belkin and is called a "Serial Extension Cable" on the blister pack. The only part number I can find on the package is P98791 and I am not sure whose part number that is as it does not match to the Staples or Belkin web sites. Also, any good sized computer vendor such as PC Connection should have a staight, plain vanilla serial extension cable.
