We're about to go boating/camping with our 1.5 year old toddler. We have a PFD, but live in AK where the water is cold, so we're interested in keeping him onboard, out of the way, and cozy, happy, or at least safe otherwise.

We're interested in any tips, tricks, etc. folks have come up with to keep their small ones safe while boating.

Thanks!

It may not be PC today, but we kept them on a short leash when they were small many years ago. Check with a attorney first. Crying or Very sad C-Otter

That is exactly what my folks did with me when I was a kid. (Especially after I was "arrested" by the security folks in some major department store for standing by the escalator that I was so enthralled with. After my arrest I was taken upstairs to some office while they attempted to locate my mother and when security wasn't watching me I ran out, and they chased me down the aisles as I ran into my mother's arms as she was approaching the security office..... Mr. Green ).

When Jessica was a toddler, Carol made a harness for her out of webbing and we hooked her to a webbing "leash" so she couldn't dart away from us in parking lots etc. Most folks thought it was a great idea, and any that didn't were blessed with my "paramedic war stories" of the toddlers that got away without a leash . That was ALWAYS effective to change their minds on the leash idea!

Perhaps, because of our actions that is why Jessica can't wait to get home from college on the weekends to be with mom and dad. Laughing .

Dave- Tell them the story about Jessica complaining that guys didn't call her because they were afraid you would answer the phone. It's in the archives somewhere. Wink

Before I had a kid I looked at people who had their kid(s) on a leash/harness system and I thought "how cruel, how ridiculous and demeaning". AFTER I had a kid, and he wanted to "escape" and play hide and seek in department stores, I thought, darn, that leash/harness thing is a very practical solution to a real life problem. It's amazing what a little real-life experience can do to a guy. Laughing

Just the other day I asked my son if I could borrow his ladder to clean the gutters. I'm pretty sure he mumbled something about putting me on a leash. Confused

We put net to secure the V berth area, so the child had a comfortable and safe "play pen". Some foam inullation on the walls help.

We used a "Johnie Jump up" for a suspended "seat"--the children loved it, and it could be moved outside or inside of the cabin. They are light enough that a pad eye should suffice for a point.

If there is any question I would have no problem with a leash--especially on the docks. More children fall off docks than off boats (or so it seems).

Also I would consider a one piece suit not sure exactly what is available up there, but a diaper flap would make life easier. (that gets into the whole issue of diapers on a C Dory (both the young and old ones!)

Marty - the day I came to my parents' house in North Bend and found my Dad on a ladder cleaning his gutters, after he had his stroke and had zero balance, agility or strength, was the day a joint decision was made to put the house on the market and move them to the Providence Point condos in Issaquah...

Pat-I live just a couple miles from Providence Point. I'll look into it. In the meantime, can I borrow your ladder?

Marty, you can borrow my ladder anytime. Just clean out MY gutters before you take it. You don't even have to bring it back! Shocked

"Mess with the bull, you get the horns!" Mr. Green

(Jessica's boyfriend of two years, just recently called me Dave for the first time.....up until then, the first name he used for me was "Mister". ). He had to call me up on the phone to ask permission to take her out on her first date with him. The fact that I'd known his dad for 20 years helped in his ablility to obtain a "guarded" yes reply from me).

I don't think that there has ever been any doubt in anyone's mind that she means a LOT to me! Wink
