Got down to the boat yesterday and discovered a little more water in the bilge than normal.

After looking at the Rule 1100 gph pump, the impeller turned freely, but would not come on. It had a mysterious bulge on the top, something I don't recall.

Haven't had a chance to diagnose and see if it has power, but anybody seen anything like this?

Thanks

I do not have any experience with this type of problem, but your statement that there is a deformity makes me think of a freezing problem. Was the unit exposed to the elements where it could have had water freeze and cause a problem?

No, the boat has been in the water all winter with the pump working just fine. I had it out about a week ago and everything was normal.

The impeller turns freely, but the mystery bulge/bump makes me think there is some sort of heat or short circuit damage underneath the plastic case. The brushes for the motor would be about where the bulge is underneath the plastic case.

Dont know what might have caused the bulge, it does sound like a heat issue. But I do know that I am not realy impressed with Rule pumps. One day mine came on and would not stop. Finaily had to unplug it. It was less than a year old. The dealer replaced it at no cost. Well I did the labor.

Was it the 1000 gallon pump with the "brain" that turns it on and off ever few minutes to check for water (as opposed to a straight pump with a float switch)?

I had one that failed once, so I cut off the top of the plastic dome neatly, removed the brain's circuit board, converted it to a direct wired pump, and epoxied the cover back on. Lobotomy was successfull. Added float switch and all was well, and The World Was Safe for Democracy Again! Rainbow

I belive that the Rule pumps do not have brushes, and are Perment Magnet motors. But there could have been a short, and heat deformit.

The dealer that outfitted our boat did not put battery switches in, and my house battery kept going dead....the company had installed one of those "brain" pumps and it was checking the bilge every few minutes...day and night... I did a "chop-chop" to the brain and it no longer checks anything.... I added a float switch and it works just fine..
Those were expensive pumps, the factory was not being cheep.. it was a good idea, but just diden't work out for me...plus I hated that random buzz it made while it was checking...kept me awake.
