Hi C-Brats - My son-in-law (David) and I (Warren) just purchased a new 22' cruiser with a 90 hp Honda engine from Cutter Marine. We will christen her "Chanty" after the old-time seafarer songs. We would welcome suggestions on how to equip the new boat, especially those things that are best left to the dealer to install. We have ordered a VHF radio, GPS, floorboards, swim platform, anchor windlass, electric wipers, and the forward facing port seat. We left out the ice box replacing it with additional storage. We look forward to getting the new boat in April, and as the newest C-Brats, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year. I'm new to computers, I hope I did this right!

A few things that I would recommend (that fall into best installed by the dealer category).
The front opening window. Really handy on hot days - also useful for handing a small boat hook or drink to someone on the bow.
A second bilge pump - located in the small depression at the stern. The forward one is not as useful as it should be and a back-up bilge is good regardless.
The swim ladder - not necessarily for swimming - but so you can be more easily retrieved if (when?) you go over. I see this as an important safety item.
Lights over the galley, the table and in the v-berth.
An extra 12V outlet both in the cabin and in the cockpit is worth considering. Fans, radios, aerators, invertors, electric blankets etc. can be found in the 12 V cigarette plug variety and it is easy to keep the single std. outlet full.
I fish a lot in the early AM and I sure wish I had a cockpit light installed at the dealer.
AM/FM radio/CD - sure you can install this yourself. But... you might never get around to it with all the boating and fishing you will be doing. One with an input that will accept line audio from a small RCA jack is good as it lets you use a computer or MP3 player as the source.
I don't know how they install the electrical panel cover (the one behind the helm in the V-berth) these days, but if they are still just screwing it in, you should request that they install it to slide in and out as many here have modified it to do so. Look in the technical albums on this site to see what I mean.
Another minor "bug" in the typical setup are the hangers for the rear of the table. Anna Leigh (I beleive) has a nicer pair of latches that you might consider getting the dealer to install upfront. Not a big deal, just a nicer way to do it.
I also really like the wallas heater/stove. There is a lengthy recent thread on this issue - it's pricey but nice.
shore power with on board battery rechargers is also nice - you can use it to keep the batteries up when it's parked in the driveway and shore power is great when sleeping aboard.
Other items that you can pick-up.
4-6 fenders - two large ones (10-12" diameter) to hang off the cleats (or near the cleats) below the front windows (you need larger ones here as the boat starts to bend in at this point). 2-4 smaller ones (6-8" diameter for the rear). You also might want to have the dealer to install fender hangers near the stern. The two near the front of the cockpit can bee hung off the hand holds or (for more adjustability) clipped to the hand rail on the roof using Fender Mate or similar clips.
3 - 25' 3/8" lines - I originally bought 5/8 lines - that's over kill and makes it hard to tie more than one line to a cleat. I typically have the bow line run back into the cockpit and next to one of the stern lines. That way, when docking you (or you boat hand) can leave with BOTH lines in hand. My C-dory was my first boat and the first many dockings were not a pretty sight. This simple change in lines made life a lot easier. If you are likely to land predominately to one side, a single bow line is sufficient. Otherwise get two and run one down each side.
A GOOD first aid kit - put a sharp and strong pair of side cutters in there - sometimes useful for removing fish-hooks.....
If you are going to do much trolling, you'll probably want down riggers. Electric ones are nice. The outlets for these are best installed when the rest of the wiring is being done.

Susan and i ordered ours a few weeks a go and have until the 15th of jan to get it from the dealer. it is the longest month of our lives. you left out radar on your list. I have never had radar but i have been out in the fog with out it and its not fun. the gps helps but does not give you the whole story. I would also recommend the camper cover. we have ordered one and it will allow us to use the c-dory more often in bad weather. i mean thats the whole biggest reason that we got the c-dory, so we could go out in any weather year round and be comfortable. hope you enjoy your boat as much as we plan to enjoy ours.

Congratulations! We bought our C-Dory 22 from Cutter Marine in 2001 and have been very pleased with both the boat and the service. The only thing that is not on your list that I would definitely want the dealer to install up front is a Wallas stove/heater. If you plan to use your boat in cold weather, it is a really nice addition. I also had them put in two rings on the stern which I have found very useful for securing the boat to the trailer and for towing a tube for the kids. Agree with the earlier post that a swim ladder and an opening front center window are nice to have. Have fun and Happy New Year!

With the single engine get the factory Swim Step rather than an over the side ladder. I consider this a required safety device as I can "self rescue" if I was to fall overboard -- assuming I wasn't even dumber and had the propeller turning! We spend more time swimming off Amelia Anne than fishing, so the step gets lots of use. The splash well requires the addition of non-slip to make this safer.
Rear eyes should be standard. We mostly use 'em for towing a "tube."
Opening center window is standard on new boats.
Electronics are highly personal. We're still chartplotter-less but I've been looking very closely at the RayMarine 435i which needs no external antenna (the 435 comes with an external) and has super complete coverage via little Compact Flash cards. Coastal areas have lots of coverage, we folks on the Great Lakes and Ohio River don't get good attention other than from the Navionics charts.
Perhaps based on the experience from our sailboats I've mounted our sounder/fishfinder where everyone can see it. An extra set of eyes on the depth as we poke into small creeks is helpful. I'll probably mount the plotter in a similar position. Yep, this requires a bigger screen.
I'm still looking for a place to mount the fuel flow meter on our tiny dashboard.

Don't know where you are on Long Island, but if you plan to do some cruising on the ocean side, the radar could be worth your purchase. We got into a dense fog on that side of your island, and it sure was nice to have "eyes" to penetrate the fog and avoid the fishermen out there, running in circles.

Chuck on Amelia Anne: I got the Raymarine 435i chart plotter this summer and really like it. It has no trouble picking up a signal through the roof and the screen and detail is great. One word of caution: I had to move my VHF radio further away from the chartplotter because of interference when transmitting on the radio. It didn't cause the GPS to lose its signal, but it made the screen flicker on and off.

| Chanty: Great to have you aboard!! One of my life dreams is to take my boat to your area and cruise by THE LADY !! Great folks at Cutter and the place I had the opportunity to step onto my 1st 22' C-Dory enroute to Ft. Dix NJ for a school. Agree with the Wallas, radar, and possibly a sattilite radio XM or Sirus for long time play commercial free sound...and entertainment too when out aboard.... in that order. Never had a heated boat, and if the water is not frozen, you can enjoy the day which truly extends the days/weeks/months of boating. The radar is great in the fog, combined with an electronic chart of your local waters "should" keep you in safe route areas & out from under the commercial traffic, and the tunes are just nice.... and.. I am looking at replacing my center window to get one that opens for air flow and just handing things thru. I love to sit out front on deck of my TomCat and just idle along with the auto pilot set, remote control to change course left or right, and enjoy the stars. And, the open window would give me a "peep hole" that is not tented... A lot of after dark hours on my boat. |
