|
|
It looks like I'll be adding Lake Tahoe on to our 3000 mile loop next summer (Ventura, Portland, Port Townsend, Friday Harbor, and now, Lake Tahoe).
Does anyone have any knowledge as to whether it is legal to leave an unattended boat anchored overnight on the lake? And if so, which anchorages would be preferred?
Failing that, can anyone recommend a marina/ mooring area? And, what can one do with an unattached boat trailer?
Thanks!

Best place to stay the night on the boat is Emerald bay. Like sitting in a bowl of 200ft gin clear water. Even has a viking castle at one end. You can anchor here but its deep unless close to shore or over the bar at the mouth. Tahoe has the best fireworks show on the south shore. Just amazing. link to map _________________ Thomas J Elliott

Tom -
Ah, Emerald Bay. Back when we lived in Reno we had a friend who was 'caretaker' of the castle, and we used to have weekends visiting with her at the castle -- a beautiful building. It even has (had?) an internal stairwell from the house to the boathouse, built back into the rock (as I remember) so you could board your boat in the boathouse without ever going outside and arrive back 'inside' your home (the castle) without leaving your boat. _________________ El and Bill (former live-aboards)

bill, I have hikes down from the road to the castle many times. really nice hike and a great beach to swim at. If we still lived in Sac tahoe would be a weekly trip for us. susan went to school at the U in reno and hit the lake all the time in the early 90's. I have not boated the lake much. When I got a boat after the service the state started the two stroke ban. Well I had a older boat so only got to use it on the big lake once.
Great , to me, things to see on the lake include the fire works on the forth, the sockeye run and underwater viewing room on the west shore. Its on taylor creek it is in the park between Camp Richardson and Emerald bay. The california land locked salmon club harvest this run for eyes every year in order to stock most of the northern california lakes. Also the rein fair near camp Richardson every year. Susan and I have both worked this fair and miss doing it. There is also the vintage wooded boat show every summer. Its week long event. I have never gotten to go. I keep trying but some thing always comes up. Now I live to far away to go. Lots to do around the lake and in the surrounding mountains. Have fun |

Thanks for all the great ideas. We'll only be on the lake a couple of days in between various family events -- celebrating a friend's 50th. But, now that I see how much there is to do, I think a dedicated trip up with a multiday stay at the boat camp in Emerald Bay is a must. |
