You're all set, Merrill. Albums are listed in alphabetical order - you're currently on page 11, or you can click here to go right to it and start adding photos.

Hi Bill,

Finally got my digital camera to talk to the computer so I have a few pics to post of Cornet Bay.

Problem, my Photoshop Elements will size the pictures for me, but don't quite know how to get them to our site -- and really don't know what size to use. 56 KB? -- or do I need to specify a numerical definition? 4 X 6?

No nerd!!!!

Dusty

Hey Dusty, you're in luck!

I'm no photo expert, but I think I can get you through this one - PS Elements is one of the tools I use on occasion.

First, resizing. When you upload photos, the photo gallery will reduce things to no more than 1024 pixels wide, so assuming your photos are larger than that (I'm almost positive they are), here's what I'd do in PS Elements to reduce upload time:
  • Load the picture into PS Elements (File...Open...)
  • From the menu, select Image --> Resize --> Image Size
  • In the window that appears, do the following:
    • Make sure the box near the bottom titled "Constrain Proportions" is checked
    • In the "Pixel Dimensions" area, change the "Width" value to 1024 and make sure "pixels" are selected in the drop-down list box. Don't worry about the height value, it will adjust automatically.
    • In the "Document Size" area, enter "72" for the "Resolution", and make sure "pixels/inch" is selected in the drop-down list box. You can ignore the other values in this section.

Here's an example of what it will look like - this may not be exact, but it's close:

Click OK, then save the resized file.

Now...navigate to the album you want to upload to by clicking the "Photo Albums" link, displayed at the top of all pages here. Here's the link for the Cornet Bay, November 2003 album. Once here, look for the "add photos" link, click on it, and follow the bouncing ball. I think things are pretty self-explanatory once you get to this point, but if not, let me know and I'll write up some more details about this final step.

One final note - PS Elements is nice for touching up and adjusting photos, but for converting lots of pictures (both in size and renaming) I use a pretty cool free tool called Irfanview - you can download and read about it at this link.

Just to be clear, folks - the process described in the mini-tutorial above is completely optional; you can upload any photo straight from your digital camera, and the photo gallery will adjust the size automatically for you if necessary.

The main reason for going through the above - reducing the amount of time it takes to upload pictures. If your camera is set to take photos at very high resolutions, the file size of the pictures can get huge. If you couple this with a slow connection to the Internet (or you're uploading a bunch of pictures), it can take a looooong time to upload things if you don't resize them first.
