I am leaving in a few days for a month of salmon fishing at Ucluelet on the west coast of VI. Any Brats going to be up that way this year? I will be there from 20 Jul to 18 Aug, staying at Island West Resort. Any Brats in the area be sure to stop by Camp CAVU for a drink and some fish stories.
Anyone have any recent fishing reports from Ucluelet or Barkley Sound? _________________ Ken Trease

Last I saw on the BC fishing boards is that it is still spotty and the feeling is they are running a few weeks late. But it looked like when they caught kings they were pretty good sized. |

I was in Ucluelet last week and the salmon were just starting to bite. Bottom fishing was looking good also. _________________ Dave B. |

I hope you have a great trip! Is Lyndon joining you? Give the old rascal a hello from Diana and me if he is.
Keep us posted on the trip/fishing.

Ken,
I will be there on the 9th of August, and will hook up for a drink and fish stories. Did you know that this is the last year that the camp grounds are going to be there? Island West will be building condo's next year. They say that they will still have the docks but this is the last year for campsites. Look forward to seeing you in August.

Steve: Yes Lyndon will be with me and I will pass your greetings along. Island West Resort has never had WiFi in the past maybe I can find a stray signal and send a few pix.
Chuck: Call in sick and come by.
Lloyds and Nomad: Thanks for the reports. I have been going to Ucluelet for 20 years and have almost always had good or at least decent fishing. My theory of fishing is keep your line wet long enough and you are bound to catch something. |

Losing Island West to condos sure doesn't make my day. You're right, you have to keep the line wet. I used to have really good fishing off Effingham Bluff and Swale rock. And I did it in a 9' inflatable with two of my sons. In years past there were huge schools of coho in those rocks. I was always dazzled by the canadians trolling by in their Arimas with two rods apiece, downriggers, planer boards, the works. Those small Arimas were bristling with rods. But we would catch just as many fish in the Avon. I fear those days are over. Glad my kids got to at least see it. |

Hey Ken, Say Hi to Lynden for Pam and I also. If your real adventurous and think the fish may be upstream from Ucluelet, Work release and the True Story will be in Nootka Sound (Critter Cove) Aug. 9-14 and you can join us

Dan,
I hope you do come by. We heard the same story about the condos in 2006. Based on what they told me I made alternate plans for summer of 2007. Later I found out they delayed the condos and I missed my summer salmon trip. With the current economic conditions I wouldn't bet any money on the condo deal happening in 2009 either. I have fairly firm plans to tow CAVU to Alaska next summer so the condo deal won't affect my summer plans next year.
Tim: sounds like you guys should get into some great fishing up there. I have wanted to try Nootka Sound for many years but just never got around to it. I would really be interested in full details of the trip. Are you launching in Gold River? Staying on the boat? |

We've been going out for over 30 years. If you need any gear in Ucluelet, Pioneer Boatworks is owned by a friend, and is a great place to shop. Have a great trip. |

Yes sirree. Launching in Gold River and staying at Critter Cove. Three nights in a cabin and two on the boat. Not necessary to stay in a cabin but it gives us a chance to spread out a bit. You can fish outside if the weather is decent and inside for hatchery kings and a few early silvers if it's not. Let's hook up after you get back and we can compare notes. You'd definitely like it up there.

nomadcruiser,
Over the years I have dropped a few coins at Pioneer Boatworks-great place for tackle and any boat repair stuff you might need.
Tim,
I will shoot you a PM as soon as I get back. I hope to go to Lake Powell this year. It will take me a week to clean the boat and repack for cruising. |
