I have to remove the front opening window on my 22' Cruiser to re-weld the aluminum mounting brackets. I plan to use a heat gun and a lot of patience. Has anyone ever done this? How hard is it and any cautions? Is the window caulked with 3M 4200 or 5200? I guess it makes a difference. Thanks in advance.

A heat gun and putty knife--possiably a long piece of heated Piano wire, to cut the sealant. I am not sure if 5200 was used, but I suspect not. C dory usually uses "Bostic" sealants...
I have taken ports and windows out of other boats, (not C Dory) using the above technique--if it is 5200, also use the "debond". On one boat I did take a small piece of laminate along with the frame-no problem, just built the area back up with MarineTex. _________________ Bob Austin

All C-Dorys built by the original company (DOR prefix in serial number) have their windows bedded in silicone. Protect the area around the window with tape and use a thin 1” putty knife. It helps if someone helps by pushing on the inside of the window. Do not cheat and try and pry the window out as that will warp the frame badly.

Thanks Mark and Bob...that is helpful! If it's only silicone, that makes it easier. I'll let you know how I make out. |
