I just wanted to say "hi" to everyone and thank Charlie and Marc of Wefing's Marine for assisting me with the boat purchase. Everthing was dealt over the phone and they even arranged tranport. What a premiere class dealership!

The boat arrived about 2 weeks ago on a flatbed and it's a 2003 22' Cruiser w/Honda BF90 that was mentioned on a different thread. All paperworks finally arrived today......WAHOO!!!

I currently have a long list of things I want to do on the boat (not that there's anything wrong with it) but have scaled back somewhat to the necessities for now.

1. Remove painted boat name and come up with a new one
2. Polish and wax
3. Mount radar arch
4. Install aft bilge pump (doesnt have one back there)
5. Remove Brass keel strip and add Keelguard

This should keep me busy for a weekend or two....

Welcome aboard.

Eazy Off Oven cleaner is often used to remove painted names from fiberglass boats.

I wonder why you want to remove the brass strip before putting on keel guard?

Hi Bob -

Thanks for the welcome.

A few brass screws came off during transport to CA so I figured why not.
Besides, we have the keelguard on the bass boat and you never know whats partially submerged in the delta.

Welcome ! If that is the 2003 that I looked at when I was at Wefings, it is super...what a nice boat.. I looked it over real well...excellent shape..

If you possibly can, sign up for Pounders Delta Extravaganza... what a roar... it's sure a fun cruise.... but for me, it's my daughters college graduation weekend and Sue said I am a "Dead Man Walking" if I don't stay home... (wonder what that feels like?)

Anyhow...Welcome...Hope to see you at Catalina this year...

Congratulations on the purchase and a big welcome here.

I replaced the brass strip with keelquard following our 2007 Alaska cruise. Hit either ice or rock not very hard because it was underwater line and didn't know until pulling from water. Bent the brass over enough to break one of the holding screws. When I removed the brass and rest of screws small amount of water came out of a couple of the screw holes. I debated on installing the keelquard over the brass or leaving it off. Thinking the brass provided very little actual protection and maybe even a hard hit with brass under keelquard could possibly break another holding screw and allowing more water intrusion decided to just totally seal all screw holes and install the keelquard. Not near as concerned about going to shore with bow of boat now. For me at the time it seemed the right thing to do, but who knows the combination of brass and keelquard may actually be better.

Welcome to the Club Albie Back (great handle by the way).

The talk of removing the brass guard has got me thinking about the idea of adding them to the Tomcat. I wonder if that may be a solution to the issues we are having with the knife edge loosing gelcoat with repeat launches? Not to mention adding some boat jewelery (he he). I know the factory had trouble for several years with drilling the screws too deep and causing leaking.

How far down does the brass guard go on the 22's and the like? Does it go down under the vessel such that it would be sitting on it if on a flat bed for example (as the Tomcat sits on the bunks)? Maybe this stress would cause other problems...i.e. getting snagged during launch and ripping it off...

Matt, being a monohull, the 22 bow doesn't sit on the bunks as ours does on the TC. The bow on those boats goes between bunks or rollers depending on the trailer type.

I would think you'd have a hard time adhering the brass/bronze to the knife edge and have it stand up to repeated launching/recoveries. It's going to take a long time to wear through anything unless you launch and recover it every day, as I know you don't and neither do I...
