The "free overnight" Grice Bay boat launch on Clayoquot Sound. Usable only at high tide.

It turned out that it isn't free or overnight.

The Tofino Port Authority launch. I ended up leaving in the evening because the launch was busy all afternoon removing a sunken boat in a multi-fatality incident.

I was watching schools of bait fish winding around in the cove and didn't see him come out of the woods. The first night's anchorage turned out to be a popular promenade. This one had just come from the beauty parlor.

I went to Marktosis the next day. This is the welcoming man at the entrance to the small harbor.

The inner harbor is mainly commercial and has the float plane dock. Here is a plane threading the passage out to where it can take off. The fuel dock is on the right.

This is looking back from the gangway on the fuel dock to the public landing. It is busy with passenger traffic all day with a crowded parking lot at the top. The walk into the city center is about 6 blocks, but beware, there are neither blocks or a city center.

Marktosis is interesting, though not very photogenic. The beaches, however, are nice.

The Ahousat General Store was interesting. It has a fuel dock, basic groceries (unrefrigerated), and an odd assortment of hardware, some of it recycled. I snooped around as much as I thought was socially acceptable.

A couple days later, I went to Hot Springs Cove. I hadn't been there since 1998. The dock had the same number of boats as before, but beware. Both the boats and the float planes run a rotation by bringing people in and picking up a prior load of tourists. Even with watching for an opening like this, there were still +20 people at the pools. And the planes make two passes. Once to see if it's clear and once to land. So the picture is a little deceptive.

This high-brow graffiti is new. The boardwalk is due to be torn out and replaced this year, but I'm sure the classy vandals will return.

Returning back towards Tofino outside of Flores Island. I fly fished for black rock fish until they had broken all my tippets and made off with all my flies. Good fun.

To paraphrase the famous line from the movie Jaws, "we're going to need a bigger pot."

Returning to Tofino, a memorial had been set up for the three missing fishermen, although many people were still searching.

In the evening, I would head in to the back waters of Clayoquot for a quiet anchorage.

I would always be treated to a show on shore. This is a dancing sasquatch.

Up in the morning and on my way by 5:30. A classic cell phone shot with my finger in the picture.

Another glorious morning outside with no wind and an invisible swell. The swell was so far apart that it only became apparent when near a shoal (suddenly a big splash) or when on plane (upppp and dowwwn).
