The Lyons Ferry (aka Snake River) highway bridge. The bridge was originally used to cross the Columbia at Vantage, but was dismantled and recycled for use at Lyons Ferry.

The Lyons Ferry railroad bridge, the longest and highest in the Union Pacific system. I couldn't get all 3,920 feet into the picture. It took four years to build.

Time to start looking for an anchorage for the night.

Making waves.

There were some remote WDFG docks, but I wanted to anchor out. Plus, when I tied up to this dock, it made a weird groaning noise. I'd rather hear coyotes if I'm going to listen to something spooky all night.

The moon comes up and muskrats swim by.

I took an audio recording, but you will just have to imagine redwing blackbirds, quail, geese, ducks, fox sparrow, chuckar, etc.

Nesting eagles on the left screeched at me for awhile.

Heading back to Lyons Ferry.

And the water turns glassy again.

All by myself for two days. Not another boat.

There is a triangle aid to navigation on the point on the right. Stay to the left, for obvious reasons.

The top of the reservoir is directly against the spillway of the next dam (Little Goose).

100 foot elevation gain in the locks.

The black dot right in the middle on the ridge is a Black Angus steer.

Heading towards the mouth of the Palouse River.

Right in the middle on the lower ridge is a rooster pheasant that was crowing.

The entrance to the Palouse canyon. The NOAA chart showed depths of 40 feet. Local knowledge was required to find the channel, which is now only several feet deep because of siltation since the last survey. My lowest reading was 1.8 feet when entering the river channel.

Once past the silted-in delta, the river opened and deepened.
