 DIY Flares 
I then heat seal them in re-purposed food packages, in this case, fish and tamales.  The tamales are vacuum bagged, which is not necessary.

Good idea, but wouldn't a Zip-Loc be easier to get into and be resealable?

Yep, but these are free and actually easier to open than zip locks.

Each corner has a little cut in it. No matter which corner you tear from, the plastic rips right open.


 

Toss out in the water.  IT IS IN THE SHADE!!  Once the smoke rose high enough for the sun to hit it, it was bright orange.  But smoke flares obviously do have their limitations.
