I got the idea from Will-C and wanted to try it since the fender hanging from the after cleat can tend to get aft of the boat. The basic idea is to put some sort of dowel into the rod holder (these were already in my boat) and then hang the fender from it. I started with Schedule 80 PVC pipe (1" IIRC), but didn't really like handling it, so this is an ash tool handle replacement (bought at Ace Hardware). To secure the fender whip to the dowel, I drilled a hole through the dowel, and then run the whip through it and then tie a figure-8 knot. That way it is adjustable if necessary. I left the dowel this long because it then keeps the whip/line off the gelcoat at the edge of the deck.
