Built during WW2 she was the largest ice breaker on the Great lakes. Served for 62 years. Decommissioned in 2006 - the same day as her replacement was commissioned. Now a museum in Mackinaw City. Painted white during the war to be less noticeable on the lakes. Was only painted in the traditional CG colors in recent years. The Vet who had served 2 tours on it and gave me my tour is hoping to raise $300,000.00 to repaint it white. |
